The S54 is one of BMW M's most iconic naturally aspirated inline-six engines, and its high-performance Dual VANOS system plays a major role in how the engine delivers power throughout the RPM range. By continuously adjusting both intake and exhaust camshaft timing, the VANOS system helps provide the S54 with its combination of low-end response, mid-range torque, and high-RPM performance.

As these engines age, the seals inside the VANOS unit can deteriorate from mileage, heat cycles, and years of exposure to engine oil. Worn seals can reduce the VANOS system's ability to maintain the hydraulic pressure necessary for accurate camshaft adjustment.

Common symptoms can include VANOS-related fault codes, inconsistent power delivery, reduced low- and mid-range torque, hesitation, poor throttle response, and VANOS performance issues.

Stage 3 goes beyond replacing the internal seals by also including the OEM VANOS housing gasket and an upgraded VANOS oil supply line, allowing you to replace the aging factory oil line while the VANOS system is already being serviced.

Upgraded S54 VANOS Oil Supply Line

One of the biggest additions to our Stage 3 kit is the Race German Upgraded S54 VANOS Oil Supply Line.

The factory oil line is responsible for supplying pressurized engine oil to the S54 VANOS system. Rather than replacing the aging factory line with another conventional replacement, our upgraded line uses premium motorsport-grade components selected for durability, heat resistance, and long-term reliability.

The hose is manufactured from Aeroquip smooth-bore PTFE racing hose with a stainless-steel braided exterior. PTFE hose is commonly used in high-performance hydraulic and motorsport applications because of its excellent strength, minimal expansion, temperature capability, and resistance to oil, abrasion, and environmental damage.

The Aeroquip PTFE hose has an operating temperature range of:

-100°F to +450°F (-73°C to 232°C)

Techflex High-Temperature Fire Sleeve

S54 engine bays generate a considerable amount of heat, so we've taken the oil line upgrade another step further by adding an industry-leading Techflex fire sleeve.

The sleeve provides another layer of thermal and abrasion protection around the stainless-braided PTFE hose.

• Melt Temperature: 2048°F / 1120°C

MOCAL USA Fittings & Titanium Hardware

The upgraded hose is terminated with premium MOCAL USA banjo fittings manufactured from high-quality steel with a protective plated finish.

The kit also includes two custom-machined banjo bolts made from aerospace-grade 6Al-4V titanium. These lightweight, corrosion-resistant bolts feature a two-oval-hole oil passage design and replace the factory hardware used to secure the VANOS oil supply line.

New applicable crush washers are included for installation.

Stage 3 takes the service further by adding the OEM VANOS housing gasket and our complete upgraded S54 VANOS oil supply line.

If you're already removing and servicing the VANOS unit, it's an ideal opportunity to replace the aging oil supply line at the same time. Rather than reinstalling an old hose and compressed housing gasket, or sourcing those components separately, Stage 3 puts the primary sealing components and a premium oil line upgrade together in one package.

Why Rebuild Your S54 VANOS?

The S54 Dual VANOS system relies on precisely controlled hydraulic pressure to continuously adjust both the intake and exhaust camshafts.

As the internal seals deteriorate, the system can lose efficiency and may struggle to achieve or maintain the camshaft positions commanded by the engine management system.

Fitment Guide

This kit is designed specifically for BMW models equipped with the S54B32 3.2-liter Dual VANOS inline-six engine.

Important: Earlier US-market Z3 M models equipped with the S52 engine use a different Single VANOS system and do not use this S54 rebuild kit.
