The VANOS solenoids are responsible for controlling engine oil flow to the variable camshaft timing system. Over time, the original seals can harden and deteriorate from constant exposure to engine oil and heat. This can contribute to VANOS faults, poor engine performance, and camshaft timing-related check engine lights.

Our kit replaces the original sealing components with upgraded FKM (Viton) O-rings, which offer improved resistance to heat, oil, and long-term deterioration compared with conventional NBR/Buna rubber.

Why Rebuild Your VANOS Solenoids?

The N51 and N52 use two VANOS solenoids—one controlling the intake camshaft and one controlling the exhaust camshaft. Problems with the solenoids or their ability to properly control oil flow can interfere with VANOS operation.

Common VANOS Fault Codes

VANOS or camshaft timing problems may be associated with codes including:

• 2A9A — Intake camshaft sensor signal invalid for synchronization
• 2A98 / P0016 — Crankshaft/intake camshaft correlation outside reference range
• 2A82 — Intake VANOS mechanically jammed
• 2A9B — Exhaust camshaft sensor signal invalid for synchronization
• 2A99 / P0017 — Crankshaft/exhaust camshaft correlation outside reference range
• 2A87 — Exhaust VANOS mechanically jammed

Important: These fault codes do not automatically mean the VANOS solenoid seals have failed. VANOS faults can also be caused by a contaminated or defective solenoid, oil pressure problems, camshaft sensors, VANOS check valves, mechanical timing issues, or other engine problems. Proper diagnosis is recommended.

This kit is specifically intended for N51/N52-family VANOS solenoids using BMW part number 11367585425. It should not be advertised as fitting all models that use a visually similar BMW VANOS solenoid.

For example, models such as the 135i, X1 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive35i/50i, X6 xDrive35i/50i, and Z4 sDrive35i/35is use different engine families and should not be included simply because they appear in broad solenoid application lists.
