Why Replace the Valve Cover Grommets?

The valve cover cap nuts themselves only provide part of the clamping system. The rubber grommets underneath the nuts help distribute pressure and maintain the proper sealing force on the valve cover.

As the original rubber ages, it loses elasticity and becomes permanently compressed. Even if the grommets aren't visibly cracked, decades-old rubber may no longer provide the clamping pressure it did when new.

Common signs of worn valve cover grommets can include:
