BMW M52TU / M54 Dual VANOS Rebuild Kit — Stage 2

BMW's Dual VANOS system independently adjusts both the intake and exhaust camshaft timing, helping the M52TU and M54 deliver the smooth torque, throttle response, and drivability these engines are known for. Unfortunately, the original VANOS piston seals deteriorate with age, mileage, and repeated heat cycles.

As the seals wear, the VANOS pistons can no longer maintain proper oil pressure and effectively control camshaft timing. Common symptoms can include loss of low-RPM torque, hesitation, uneven power delivery, poor throttle response, VANOS-related fault codes, and reduced overall performance.

In addition to seal wear, Dual VANOS units can develop mechanical wear in the bearing assemblies. This creates the familiar VANOS rattle, often described as sounding like marbles or rocks rattling around at the front of the engine.

Our Stage 2 kit addresses both common problems by combining a complete set of upgraded PTFE and FKM seals with two anti-rattle bushing sets for the intake and exhaust sides of the Dual VANOS unit.

Why Rebuild Your Dual VANOS?

The factory VANOS seals are a known wear item on M52TU and M54 engines. As they deteriorate, VANOS performance can gradually decline. Because this happens slowly, many owners don't realize how much performance has been lost until the unit is rebuilt.

Replacing the worn piston seals can help restore proper VANOS operation and the engine's intended camshaft timing response.

Stage 2 goes one step further by replacing the worn components within the VANOS bearing assemblies that can contribute to the characteristic metallic rattle.

What About VANOS Rattle?

Unlike Stage 1, Stage 2 is designed to address both seal deterioration and VANOS rattle.

M52TU and M54 Dual VANOS units can develop wear within the bearing assemblies over time. This can create a metallic rattling noise from the front of the engine, commonly described as marbles or rocks rolling around inside the VANOS unit.

Because the VANOS unit is already removed and disassembled when replacing the seals, this is an ideal time to address the anti-rattle components as well.

Fitment Guide

This kit is designed for BMW models equipped with M52TU and M54 Dual VANOS inline-six engines. Engine availability and production dates can vary by market.

Note: BMW model years, production dates, and engine configurations vary by market. Some chassis transitioned to newer engines during their production run, so we recommend verifying that your vehicle is equipped with an M52TU or M54 engine before ordering.

This kit is not intended for the earlier M50TU/M52 Single VANOS system or the later N52/N54-series VANOS systems.

Stage 2: Dual VANOS Seals + Rattle Repair

Choose Stage 2 if you want to address the two most common wear areas inside your M52TU/M54 Dual VANOS unit.

The kit combines the complete Stage 1 seal package with two anti-rattle bushing sets, allowing you to refresh the seals on both VANOS pistons while addressing wear in both bearing assemblies.

If your VANOS is already out of the car, Stage 2 is a great way to take care of the seals and the rattle components at the same time.
