BMW M52TU / M54 Dual VANOS Rebuild Kit — Stage 4

For the most complete M52TU/M54 VANOS service, our Stage 4 Dual VANOS Rebuild Kit combines the internal VANOS rebuild components from Stage 3 with the additional gaskets, grommets, and oil feed line needed to refresh the surrounding components while everything is already apart.

BMW's Dual VANOS system independently adjusts both the intake and exhaust camshaft timing, helping the M52TU and M54 deliver smooth torque, throttle response, and drivability throughout the RPM range. Unfortunately, the original VANOS seals deteriorate with age, mileage, and repeated heat cycles.

As the seals wear, the VANOS pistons can lose their ability to maintain proper oil pressure and effectively control camshaft timing. Common symptoms can include loss of low-RPM torque, hesitation, uneven power delivery, poor throttle response, VANOS-related fault codes, and reduced overall performance.

Dual VANOS units can also develop mechanical wear within the bearing assemblies, creating the infamous VANOS rattle. This metallic noise is often described as sounding like marbles or rocks rattling around at the front of the engine.

Stage 1 replaces the primary internal VANOS piston seals. Stage 2 adds the anti-rattle components. Stage 3 adds the OEM VANOS sealing gasket and piston housing seals.

What About VANOS Rattle?

Stage 4 is designed to address both VANOS seal deterioration and bearing-related VANOS rattle.

M52TU and M54 Dual VANOS units can develop wear within their bearing assemblies over time. This can create the familiar metallic rattling noise from the front of the engine.

The included two anti-rattle bushing sets provide the bushings and bearings needed to service both VANOS bearing assemblies while the unit is apart.

More Than Just a VANOS Rebuild

Stage 4 goes beyond the VANOS unit itself.

The valve cover gasket and spark plug well gaskets replace common leak points that can become hard and brittle with age. The 15 rubber grommets refresh the sealing points at the valve cover fasteners.

We've also included a VANOS oil feed line with banjo bolts. This line supplies pressurized engine oil to the VANOS system and is another component that can develop leaks as these engines age.

Rather than removing the valve cover and VANOS unit only to reinstall decades-old surrounding components, Stage 4 allows you to refresh the entire area at once.

This kit is not intended for the earlier M50TU/M52 Single VANOS system or the later N52/N54-series VANOS systems.
